Mycoplasma pneumoniae Reagents

Mycoplasma pneumonia (M. pneumonia) is a contagious respiratory infection. Every year almost 2 million Americans are treated for M. pneumonia. The disease is easily spread through contact with respiratory fluids, and it causes regular epidemics. The bacteria can cause a host of symptoms such as primary atypical pneumonia, tracheobronchitis, and upper respiratory tract disease. Tracheobronchitis is most common in children due to a reduced immune system capacity, and up to 18% of infected children require hospitalization.

Diagnosis is difficult in the early stages of Mycoplasma pneumonia because there are few common symptoms. As the disease progresses, it can be detected through imaging and laboratory tests. Sensitive and specific immunological detection techniques such as ELISA are established in clinical practice. These assays use purified M. pneumoniae antigen to detect specific IgG, IgM or IgA antibodies to the bacteria or antibodies to M. pneumonia to detection the presence of the bacteria in the patient's serum and respiratory samples.

Meridian offers new antibody pairs for Mycoplasma pneumonia. These antibodies are specific for the P1 adhesin protein and do not cross-react with other mycoplasma species.
