New Monoclonal Antibodies for Yellow Fever NS1
Yellow Fever is a flavivirus spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. It causes acute viral disease that typically requires hospitalization and accounts for 30,000 deaths per year. Since the 1980’s the number of cases of yellow fever have been increasing.
Due to the adaptability of the Aedes aegypti mosquito to high-density urban areas combined with worldwide climate change, recent years have demonstrated that populations are increasingly susceptible to contracting flavivirus infections. Specifically, large epidemics have been shown to occur when infected people introduce the virus into heavily populated areas with high mosquito density and where most people have little or no immunity due to lack of vaccination. A live-virus vaccine has been used for several decades to prevent Yellow Fever.
