Atypical Pneumonia – Mycoplasma, Chlamydia & Legionella
Antigens & Antibodies for Assay Development

Atypical pneumonia is caused by non-traditional pathogens such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae), Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) and Legionella pneumonohila. These bacteria can cause outbreaks and lead to serious complications in susceptible populations such as children and the elderly.

Both M. pneumoniae and C. pneumoniae are respiratory pathogens that can be spread from person-to-person through coughing and sneezing. Legionella is a type of bacterium found naturally in fresh water and can contaminate warm-water systems such as hot tubs, cooling towers (e.g. air-conditioning units for large buildings), hot water tanks, etc. People are exposed to Legionella when they breathe in a mist or vapor containing the bacteria (transmission is not person-to-person).

Several methods are available for the detection of Legionella, M. pneumoniae and C. pneumoniae infection including culture, serological tests and real-time PCR techniques. However, rapid assays for specific IgM antibody detection and antigen detection are highly sought after due to their advantage of speed to prevent outbreaks. For Legionella, existing assays rely on urine specimens, although new techniques for water samples are currently emerging.
